North
of K2, in the Chinese province of
Xinjiang, the great peaks of the
Karakoram rise abruptly above the
Taklamakan Desert and the lower
ranges of the Kun Lun. We access
this stark and beautiful territory
by way of the Torugart Pass and
the old Silk Route oasis town of
Kashgar. Kashgar is a silk road
oasis town linking all of China
with Central Asia through the
Torugart pass. Kashgar’s Sunday
market is one of the most unusual
and exotic markets in the world, a
trading place for goods passing in
and out of China. Accompanied by
camels and their Uighur drivers,
our week-long walk-in takes us
alongside the Yarkand and Shaksgam
rivers to the Aghil Pass (4785m.),
beyond which we have increasingly
impressive views of K2, Broad Peak
and the Gasherbrums. With 5 days
for exploration above our highest
camp at Suget Jangal, we will be
following in the footsteps of
early Himalayan explorers, such as
Francis Younghusband and Eric
Shipton.
