| Sacred
Mountains in Kham, from Genye to Konkalin |
 |
|
Kham,
is a magnificent landscape of
immense old growth forests, vast
undulating grasslands, deep
valleys, alpine lakes and
glaciated massifs reaching over
20,000 ft. The Khampa people who
inhabit this land are devout
Buddhists. For centuries they have
circumambulated mountains believed
to be sacred manifestations of
various Buddhist divinities. The
Konkaling Peaks and Mt. Genye in
SW Kham are two such lofty
mountains. These peaks are some of
the most beautiful in all of
Tibet. We will drive through Kham
to Mt. Genye area, which is one of
the most untouched regions of Kham.
It is the highest peak in the
vicinity at just over 6000m. Its
fluted walls and hanging glaciers
appear suddenly out of the forests
and grasslands that surround it.
We will first visit the Naigu
Monastery on the foot of this
mountain. Then we will travel to
Konkaling peaks, circumambulate
this sacred mountain and then
finish out trip in Gyeltang in
Yunnan province. After a day
touring some of Gyeltang's
beautiful monasteries we fly out
to Kunming. It is also possible to
schedule this trip to coincide
with the famous Lithang Horse
Festival which is held every year
on August 1st.
