To
virtually all Tibetans, the
natural environment of Tibet is
sacred. Within Tibet's sacred
geography, lakes play a
significant role. One of the most
important lakes is Lhamo Latso.
Located near the Yarlung valley in
central Tibet, Lhamo Latso gained
fame for it's potency in providing
Buddhist Lamas who traveled to the
lake, with visions of prophetic
nature. Over the centuries it
became a tradition for lamas in
search of a newly reincarnated
Dalai Lama to travel here and sit
in meditative absorption until
visions of the new child and his
location were received. It
continues to be used for visionary
purposes through the present day.
The lake is reached after 4-5 days
of moderate trekking. The area
around the lake provides views of
various Himalayan summits. This
trek is perfect for those limited
on time, yet wishing to experience
Tibetan culture in a seldom
visited area. Depending on
interest, this trek can be
expanded to include monastic
complexes, and cave hermitages in
neighboring valleys.
